10. Blue Whale Unit Catch Limit
(from "Chairman's Report of the Fourteenth Meeting")
The Commission considered the position of the blue whale unit catch limit which
stood at 15,000 for the next season in the absence of any special action.
They noted the view of the Scientific Committee that the stocks were in a bad
way, that it would be desirable to obtain separate limits for special stocks
and that the results of the special investigations were awaited.
In these circumstances it was decided that the blue whale unit limit should
remain as it was but it was hoped that the special investigations would be
proceeded with as soon as possible so that the situation could be effectively
re-examined at the next meeting of the Commission.
The Commissioner for New Zealand expressed regret that the Commission was not
inclined to take any action on this matter at the present meeting.
