10. Land Station Catches in the Southern Hemisphere

(from "Chairman's Report of the Twentieth Meeting")

The Commissioner for South Africa reported that South Africa, the only member country engaged in baleen whale catching from land stations in the Southern Hemisphere, was operating from only one of its two land stations and that the catch was well below the limit which that country had voluntarily imposed. The Commissioner for Australia reported that his country had a voluntary ban on baleen whale catching and that its catch of sperm whales was very much lower than in the past. The Bureau of International Whaling Statistics reported that no whaling operations were conducted by Peru in 1967, and the Government of Chile had informed the Bureau that only one station would be in operation in 1968.
