13. North Pacific Whale Stocks

(from "Chairman's Report of the Twentieth Meeting")

The North Pacific Commissioners met in Honolulu in November, 1967 and voluntary restrictions in the catching of fin and sei whales in the North Pacific were being applied during the 1968 season. The Technical Committee reported that further meetings of the Commissioners had been held during the current week and they had indicated their agreement to the following regulations for the 1969 season:

(1)
The catch quota for fin whales shall be 1,600 whales (excluding the catch in the East China Sea);
(2)
The catch of sei whales shall not exceed the 1967 catch.

The Chairman of the North Pacific Commissioners (the Commissioner for the United States of America) informed the Commission that details of the agreement, including the division of the quota, would be formalized by an exchange of notes between the Governments of the countries concerned.
