7. Antarctic Baleen Stocks

The Scientific Committee made a very full study of the F.A.O. report on baleen
stocks and the paper by Japanese scientists on the sei whale population in the
Antarctic.
It concluded that the best estimate of the present sustainable yields for the
Antarctic was:
Fin whales 5,000: Sei whales 5,400: making a total of 3,400 blue whale
units.
The Commission accepted the Technical Committee's recommendation that F.A.O.
be thanked for its stock assessment work and asked to continue it next year.
