19. Catch Limit in Southern Hemisphere outside the Antarctic

(from "Chairman's Report of the Twenty-Fourth Meeting")

The Scientific Committee recommended that the catch of male sperm whales in the southern hemisphere should not be allowed to exceed 8,000 and that a safe total catch for females would be 5,000. The Commission accepted the Technical Committee's recommendation that the catch limits for 1973 should be set at these figures and amended the Schedule by deleting sub-paragraph 8(j) and adding a new sub-paragraph 8(h) as follows:

"The number of sperm whales taken in the Southern Hemisphere in the 1972/73 pelagic season and the 1973 coastal season shall not exceed 8,000 males and 5,000 females."
