21. North Atlantic Baleen Whales

The Scientific Committee reviewed available data relating to North Atlantic whale stocks. Although the stocks of fin and sei whales in the Northwest Atlantic were apparently still above the level giving maximum sustainable yield, the Committee recommended that a further reduction should be made in the fin whale quota set by Canada and that a quota be set for sei whales. The Technical Committee suggested that Canada be urged to adopt the Scientific Committee's recommendation as soon as possible. The Canadian delegation stated that the Canadian Government was aware of the problem and intended to keep a careful watch on the stock situation.
